Apple Valley Dog Park reopens after turf improvement

The last few weeks have been “ruff” for Apple Valley residents and neighbors who enjoy the Town’s dog park. The facility has been closed for about 12 weeks while staff worked doggedly to re-seed the ground and establish healthier turf.

“Drought conditions, combined with the park’s heavy use had left the park with large patches of dirt,” explained Director of Public Works Greg Snyder. “Those are less than ideal conditions for any dog park so we knew we needed to ‘paws’ and do some maintenance.”

The park opened in the fall of 2012 as the High Desert’s first off-leash dog park. It features approximately two acres of fenced property with separate areas for large and small dogs. Amenities include benches, human drinking fountains, dog drinking fountains, dog waste pick-up stations and grass.

Town staff has been “hounded” with inquiries for weeks while the work took place.

“It is very clear that the park is a very well-loved facility,” said Snyder. “We apologize for the inconvenience the closure caused, but we are confident our users, pets and people included, will like the improved turf.”

The dog park, which reopened on Friday, is located at Civic Center Park behind Town Hall at 14955 Dale Evans Parkway and is open from dawn until dusk. For more information please call the Parks and Recreation Department at (760) 240-7880.
