Yucca Loma Bridge receives Outstanding Public Works Project of the Year

YLB Public Works Award

Five months after it opened to traffic, the Yucca Loma Bridge was named the 2017 Outstanding Public Works Project of the Year by the High Desert Branch of the American Public Works Association. The bridge officially opened to the public on Monday, May 22, 2017.

“It took a decade to complete the design and construction process, but we finally have the Yucca Loma Bridge in service,” said Town Engineer Brad Miller.

The Yucca Loma Bridge is a new east-west connection between the Mojave River crossings at Highway 18 and Bear Valley Road. The longest bridge in the Victor Valley, it is the natural extension of Yucca Loma Road and a critical access point for the town. The new bridge features Class II bikeways, a barrier protected sidewalk on the north side, and a barrier protected Class I bikeway on the south side.

Projects considered for the outstanding public works project of the year had to have been completed or placed in service within 12 months prior to the nomination deadline. The award will be presented at the branch’s annual dinner on Dec. 1.

“We have anticipated the completion of this project for many years,” said Mayor Scott Nassif. “From an economic development and community standpoint, the bridge represents an achievement milestone for the town and its residents. The classic design will stand the test of time.”

APWA is the professional association of public works leaders throughout the United States and Canada.  The High Desert Branch is a division of the Southern California Chapter of the American Public Works Association, specifically serving the high desert regions of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, including the Santa Clarita, Antelope and Victor Valleys.
