WORDSMITH PRODUCTIONS

WORDSMITH PRODUCTIONS presents the 2018 HIGH DESERT BOOK FESTIVAL, Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Wordsmith Productions will host the 2018 High Desert Book Festival on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Apple Valley Chamber of Commerce at the Spirit River Center in Apple Valley.
“This is definitely a mini version of the major book festival that we produced in 2016 when we were part of the Victorville Fall Festival,” said Wordsmith CEO Davida James. “We were scheduled to hold the book festival again at the 2017 Fall Festival, and sadly we had to cancel. We didn’t want another year to go by without having at least a pop-up festival.” Pop-up events have become in vogue in recent years with stores, restaurants, celebrities and designers holding smaller versions of events or staging the products from their brick and mortar venues at other locations.

This year, the book festival is held indoors at the Apple Valley Chamber of Commerce Building. In addition to authors having their books for sale, there will be book-related gift items, an area set aside for poetry and readings by the registered authors. “Our nonprofit had a booth this past April at the L.A. Times Festival of Books at USC, as we will again in 2019,” James said. “Authors from Los Angeles and the High Desert shared the space with us. It was fun to have folks from the Inland Empire stop by to chat.” Mary Langer Thompson, Senior Poet Laureate of California (2012) will have her poetry collection, Poems in Water, available as well as her children's book, How the Blue-Tongued Skink got his Blue Tongue, in both English and Spanish. Other local writers who will be signing at the festival include Marilyn King, author of a historical romance series, Lorelai Kay, author of “From Mormon to Mermaid” and children’s author Rita Wells whose book “Janie Plants a Tree” will be available for sale.

Several of the authors were also exhibitor at the 2016 High Desert Book Festival that was part of the Victorville Fall Festival.
James said that the festival will have new authors from several genres, some that are seasoned writers with several published books and others who are published for the first time.

“There are so many choices that will be available that we feel confident there will be something to satisfy most tastes,” James said. “And because this is a much smaller venue than our last book festival, we offered other authors a chance to have their marketing materials available, even if we couldn’t accommodate them as exhibitors this year.” One group from the previous festival is the authors from “Written by Veterans.” Several members will be present with their books. This is a writing program at Cal State University, San Bernardino that nurtures the talent of these veterans. It has culminated in several published works that will be available at the book festival.

“There is something magical when authors and book lovers gather at a book festival because of their mutual appreciation of the written word,” James said. “We always intended for the book festival to be an annual event. We plan to go back to the larger festival next year, with the proper support.”

Full lists of authors are updated on the event website: highdesertbookfest.org.
