March 15-19, 2010 is Flood Awareness Week, get the facts!
More deaths occur due to flooding each year than from any other thunderstorm or hurricane related hazard. Many of these casualties are a result of careless or unsuspecting motorists who attempt to navigate flooded roads. The National Weather Service now warns anyone who comes to a flooded roadway, “Turn around… don’t drown!”

Recommendations
-
Do not attempt to drive across creeks or flooded roads where the water is deeper than 6 inches to avoid loss of control or possible stalling. Water one foot deep will float many vehicles and two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including SUV’s and pick up trucks
-
Check local weather and road conditions before you head towards the National Forest
-
Wherever you travel, bring a warm jacket, hat, gloves, appropriate footwear and an extra set of dry clothes.
-
If traveling in the mountain areas please be sure to have snow chains, extra food and water in case you encounter snow conditions
