Apple Valley, Victorville to remember the fallen in ceremonies Monday

Apple Valley, CA – May 24, 2019: Town Councilman Art Bishop will emcee and Mayor Pro-Tem Scott Nassif will give the welcome address at the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Sunset Hills Memorial Park on Monday, May 27.

“It is an honor to take a day to pay tribute to the men and women who courageously gave their lives to assure that America remains the land of the free,” said Mayor Pro-Tem Scott Nassif.

Hosted by Sunset Hills Memorial Park and Victor Valley Mortuary and Memorial Park, the Apple Valley ceremony will begin at noon followed by lunch prepared and served by the Cougar Kitchen from Granite Hills High School. A morning service will be held at Victor Valley Memorial Park at 9 a.m.

Memorial Day honors those who have died while serving our nation in the Armed Forces. The practice of honoring our fallen began as Decoration Day after the Civil War when families of both Union and Confederate forces began to decorate the graves of the fallen. This act eventually became known as Memorial Day and was standardized to be celebrated on the last Monday in May by an act of Congress in 1968.

Monday’s local remembrance will include an address by LTC Russell O. Wagner, 2nd Squadron, 11th ACR Commander from the National Training Center if Fort Irwin.

Event Coordinator Lance and Carol Kruse have been putting these programs together for more than 20 years. They said, “It’s really a labor of love and gratitude.”

Other participants Chaplain Johnny Lewis, members of the Academy for Academic Excellence Air Force Junior ROTC, mounted riders from the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Posse, Shane Churchill, Music Director of Granite Hills High School in Apple Valley and more.

Sunset Hills Memorial Park is located at 24000 Waalew Road in Apple Valley. Services start at noon and is followed by a free lunch.
