Apple Valley, CA – March 14, 2020: In response to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, for the health and safety of our residents and customers, the Town of Apple Valley is suspending all Recreation Department programs and events including Special Apples, A.S.A.P., Spring/Day Camp, and aquatic programming, beginning March 16 through March 31.

All recreation and community center buildings will also be closed, and all private facility rentals will be canceled March 16 through March 31.

All other Town government services and hours of operation remain normal, including Animal Services. Open air parks will also remain open to the public.

The regular Town Council meeting will take place as scheduled on March 24. However, the community is encouraged to watch online at www.applevalley.tv or on Frontier channel 29 or Charter Spectrum channel 186.

While there have been no cases of coronavirus reported in the community to date, these closures and cancellations are a form of proactive social distancing intended to help protect the health and safety of our user groups, residents and employees.

Public health agencies are advocating for social distancing measures to “flatten the curve,” a term that describes the action to delay, or prevent, the rapid spread of the coronavirus in order to avoid overwhelming hospitals and healthcare workers. Protective measures include: frequent hand washing, avoiding shaking hands, avoiding assembling in large or dense crowds, and staying home if you become sick.

“The Town is closely monitoring the situation and is working closely with various federal, state and local government and health agencies,” said Mayor Scott Nassif. “We recognize this is a rapidly changing matter of importance to our community and we will continue to communicate with our residents and customers as information is made available.”

Local information will be updated on the Town's Facebook page and website at www.applevalley.org. Please email questions to info@applevalley.org.

Essential and Non-Essential Businesses and Gatherings

The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health and the San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services are working cooperatively to keep cities throughout the County updated with the latest information and guidance on a variety of topics ranging from allowable gatherings, personal hygiene to travel advisories.

On March 17, the County of San Bernardino issued a clarifying statement to their earlier order concerning social gatherings. The order requires the cancellation of public or private gatherings of people through April 6. The order defines “gathering” as “any event or convening that brings together people in a single room or single space at the same time.” Learn more >

Heightened Hygiene Practices

As is typical during any flu season, public health officials recommend individuals take a number of steps to protect both their health and the health of those around them, which include:

  • Wash hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with individuals who are sick.
  • N95 masks are NOT recommended outside of a healthcare setting. Surgical masks can be worn by sick individuals to reduce their likelihood of spreading germs.
  • If someone becomes sick with a respiratory symptoms like fever and cough, they should stay away from work, school and other people to avoid spreading the illness and seek treatment from their healthcare provider.

The Town of Apple Valley will continue to monitor the situation and immediately inform the community if any specific precautions or guidance are provided by either the Department of Public Health or the Office of Emergency Services.
