Welcome to the Parks and Recreation Department’s Virtual Recreation Center!

Here you will find fun and educational virtual resources for you and your family during California's Stay at Home order. We hope these resources inspire playful and fun activities, virtual connection with other families and friends, and options to achieve a healthy lifestyle! 

Be sure to visit here frequently, as well as on Facebook , as we will update our activities often. We also plan to soon hosting challenges, competitions, and interactive videos and tutorials with Recreation Staff.

Virtual Events: 

Teen Art Contest

  • Submissions for our Teen Art Contest are in, and we need your help picking the winners!
    Artwork was submit by teens from all over the High Desert, in the following categories:

         1) Drawing (black and white)
         2) Drawing (full color)
         3) Painting
         4) Photography (landscape or still life)
         5) Photography (people or animals)
         6) Digital Art

    Voting will close Monday, May 25th at midnight. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, May 27th!

Flattening the Curve - Virtual 5K

  • What: The Virtual 5K is perfect for Social Distancing! You'll run (or walk!) at your own pace, on your own route, on your own time! At the end of the race window, we will randomly draw two finishers to receive a prize!  We're running virtually to Flatten the Curve; so be sure to practice Social Distancing when running!
  • Who: Everyone! The event is FREE!
    • Custom Finishers medals are available for just $10!
  • When: The 5K race window begins Monday April 27th and will complete May 30th! 
  • How: Begin by registering for the Flattening the Curve - Virtual 5K HERE.
    • Track your miles using a fitness app such as a FitBit, Apple Watch, Map My Run, Nike Run, etc.. Submit your total run time and distance via email HERE.
      • Once you're done, be sure to purchase your (very real) Flattening the Curve 5K Medal! 
      • Be sure to post your 5K photos using #AVRecreation, and follow us @AVRecreation!
        • Throughout the race window we will re-share your posts, and random participants will be selected to receive a prize for posting photos!

Outdoors and Safe

Residents are encouraged to stay active around your home or at Town open-space parks. Please follow all social distancing and face-covering guidelines while you’re out.

  • Take a walk or a run around the neighborhood! Use apps such as Map My Run and the NikeRun Club to track your miles (this MAY come in handy later...)
  • May is Water Safety Month!
    • May is National Water Safety Month, and while the public pools remain closed, it is more important than ever y to remain water-safe! The American Red Corss has released a FREE Water Safety course for Parents and Caregivers! This course focuses on developing an awareness of the risks of drowning and how to minimize those risks. The course can be found HERE!
  • Scavenger Hunts

    • ABC Hunts: Start by making a fun and colorful ABC checkoff sheet (HERE is a printable version if you’d like!) Then  grab a pencil and have them search the house or yard for something that starts with every letter! At the end whoever has the most checked off wins! Celebrate with a snack!

    • Nature Hunts: Use this printable sheet, and head outside! See how many of the items you can find!
  • Kite Flying

    • It tends to get a little windy in Apple Valley, let’s take advantage! Build your Kite and let us see it!
